The New York study was done by the N.Y. Blood Center with the Gay Men's Health Project. In the study. 96% of those volunteers receiving the vaccine developed antibodies against the virus that causes Hep-B.
The full series is three shots and none of those who completed the series contacted Hep-B
Gay men were chosen for the study as they have a much higher risk of developing the disease. About 5-7% of gay men
carry the disease but show no、 symptoms. These carriers can easily infect others.
Once known as 'the junkies disease' Hep-B was thought to be transmitted by dirty needles.
Researchers now know that it is spread by bodily fluids-tears, breast milk, semen, urine, etc. It
can be spread by sexual contact or sharing a cigarette or toothbrush or eating utensil. Shellfish can also be contaminated and carry the disease.
Although common among gay men, incidence is rare among lesbians.

The Center for Disease Control's Hepatitis Research Lab in Phoenix is also using gay male volunteers for a test, similar to the N.Y. study but with the volunteers using half the dosage.
Similar tests are also ongoing in L.A., St. Louis and 'Frisco.
This type of vaccine protects only against type B and offers no protection against the type A. This is present in the feces and can be spread by oral-anal contact. This is also a high risk strain for gay males.

My answer is going to be a little longer than normal, but stay with me. If you see a news production on television that is offensive: First, write the public relations ⚫ department of the network that carried the show. (Addresses

are availaberiodically in both papers in the TV sections) Second: Write a letter to the local . station that ran the show. Your letter should not be abusive nor should it be militant. Just a business-like letter, citing your complaint is sufficient. It should be tastefully worded, and typed in a business format. Lastly, and often, most importantly, keep a record of the products that are advertised during the presentation of an offensive program. Then, find the manufacturer's name either on the product or by calling the Public Library, Business section. Next, write a letter to the president of the company, complaining about the fact that gays were portrayed unfairly in one of their sponsored programs. If you have trouble sorting all that out: Send a stamped envelope to me, care, of this paper, and I will give you a hand. Remember, manufacturers of products made in America and promoted on TV must be made to realize (as they did in recent years with blacks) that gays have tremendous buying power! Your tastefully. written letter of.com. plaint can bring that fact home. quickly.
